About the Land Rover Discovery 5

The Land Rover Discovery 5, also known as the L462, replaced the Discovery 4 in 2017 and brought a more modern, aerodynamic design to the lineup. Built on an aluminium-intensive platform shared with the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, the Discovery 5 offers improved fuel efficiency and a smoother on-road ride. It features advanced off-road systems, full-time four-wheel drive, air suspension, and seating for up to seven. Engine options include turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder petrol and diesel units, along with mild-hybrid options introduced in later models. While it moved away from the rugged boxy shape of the previous generation, the Discovery 5 remains a highly capable 4WD tourer that blends luxury, technology, and practicality.

Common Land Rover Discovery 5 problems

Many owners report problems with the Touch Pro infotainment system, including screen freezing, delayed response, or crashing. This can affect navigation, Bluetooth, and reversing camera functionality. Most issues are addressed through software updates or dealer servicing.
Diesel models equipped with AdBlue systems have experienced faults ranging from low sensor accuracy to complete system failure. A common symptom is a warning message indicating no engine restart after a certain number of kilometres. Faulty sensors or blocked AdBlue lines are often the cause.
The electronic air suspension system is prone to compressor wear, height sensor failures, and calibration issues. Warning lights on the dash or the vehicle sitting unevenly are typical symptoms. The system can often be recalibrated but may require part replacement over time.
Some Discovery 5s have been reported to develop water ingress issues, particularly around the tailgate or panoramic roof seals. This can lead to damp carpets, fogged windows, or electrical problems in the rear fuse box if left unchecked.
Whining or humming sounds from the rear of the vehicle may indicate premature wear in the rear differential. This has been reported by some owners as early as 60,000 km. Repairs may involve bearing replacement or full diff rebuilds.
Early versions of the 2.0L Ingenium diesel engine have shown signs of timing chain stretch, which can cause engine rattle at startup and poor performance. Left untreated, this can lead to serious engine damage and typically requires a chain replacement.
Owners have reported a wide range of minor electrical issues, from keyless entry faults to warning lights appearing for no apparent reason. These are usually traced back to software glitches or battery voltage irregularities and often require diagnostics and updates.
Some 2.0L and 3.0L petrol engines consume more oil than expected. Owners are advised to regularly check oil levels and top up between services. Excessive oil consumption may also indicate valve seal or piston ring wear.
