About the Land Rover L405 & L460

The L405 Range Rover, sold from 2013 to 2022, marked a significant shift for Land Rover's flagship model. It introduced a lightweight all-aluminium body, a smoother ride with advanced air suspension, and an updated, luxurious interior. The L405 came with a wide range of powertrains, including supercharged V6 and V8 petrol engines, turbocharged diesels, and later, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid options.

In 2022, the fifth-generation L460 Range Rover was released in Australia, bringing an all-new platform, even more refined design language, and modern tech such as four-wheel steering, active noise cancellation, and an upgraded Pivi Pro infotainment system. With standard all-wheel drive, Terrain Response, and luxury-focused trims like Autobiography and SV, both models combine genuine off-road capability with class-leading comfort.

Common Land Rover L405 & L460 problems

Air suspension issues are common, with faulty height sensors, leaking air struts, or compressor wear leading to uneven ride height or suspension warning lights. These problems often appear around 100,000 km and can require replacement parts or recalibration.
Petrol V6 and V8 models have been known to develop coolant leaks due to faulty water pumps or cracked coolant pipes. Left untreated, this can cause overheating and engine damage.
The InControl infotainment system in L405 models can suffer from lag, screen freezes, or GPS malfunctions. Software updates from the dealer generally improve reliability, but full unit replacement may be needed in some cases.
On some supercharged V6 and V8 engines, a rattling noise at cold start can indicate stretched timing chains or worn guides. This can become a serious issue if left unresolved and typically requires timing chain replacement.
Oil leaks are not uncommon, especially in higher-mileage vehicles. The most frequent locations are the rear main seal and timing chain covers. These leaks often require engine-out repairs if severe.
